Biography
Born in Iowa and earning a Master of Fine Arts from Drake University, Roy's artistic journey has taken him to numerous cities and countries around the globe, shaping both his worldview and creative practice. Over the past 25 years, he has cultivated a distinct visual language rooted in perceptual psychology, memory, and the slow decoding of visual experience. Influenced by the mosaics of ancient Italy and the monumental portraiture of Chuck Close, Roy developed a signature style using hand-painted, single-color squares to build complex representational images. His works play with the threshold between abstraction and clarity, inviting viewers to step back — both physically and metaphorically — to grasp the whole. Roy's work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, and he continues to push the boundaries of visual perception through his evolving mosaic technique. Whether depicting urban scenes, natural forms, or cultural icons, his paintings explore the intersection of image, meaning, and time.Get the Full Download
